| LiveJournal Major Notes: Spam counter-attack, RSS feeds again, CSI Deadly Intent contest |
[05 Nov 2009|01:15pm] |

The empire strikes backIn recent weeks, we've taken huge steps towards blocking spam accounts on LiveJournal. In fact, we've suspended as many as 30,000 accounts in a single day! We've implemented several pre-emptive measures to prevent the creation of spam accounts, and we've honed our detection of suspicious content. Spam bots are a crafty lot, so we'll continue to refine our tactics and keep up the good fight to keep you safe from spam attacks on LiveJournal.
RSS feeds againIf you're addicted to , icanhaschzbrgr, or other syndicated feeds, we're pleased to report that we've resolved the update error that was mucking up your RSS feeds. While content was being pulled correctly, it wasn't being posted to the feeds themselves. Late last week, we finally nailed down what we hope was the root problem, so content should post properly. We thank you for your patience.

[04 Nov 2009|09:42am] |
This community of experimental fiberglass domes offered transitional housing for as many as thirty-four homeless people. Eight of the domes contained common facilities, including kitchens, bathrooms, laundries and computer rooms. The other twelve provided shelter for single individuals or families. http://domevillage.tedhayes.us( +1 )

I’m selling a vintage Barbie case on Swedish auction site Tradera since I have two of it, along with a few vintage and mod barbie clothes and a vintage Skipper head. International bidders are welcome but ask me for shipping costs first if you’re interested. Click the picture to go to the auction. You can comment at my blog or here.

What do you do when someone you go to school with deserves to have their balls clamped in an iron vice???
There's a guy named Albert in my program, he got kicked out of the previous year's graduating class, and they let him join ours because he promised he'd do better. He's a douchebag and I sort of hate his guts.
He never shows up to class on time, if he comes at all. We have mandatory warm-ups at 8:30am mondays, wednesdays, and thursdays, and we have had them for a month, and he's NEVER been to one. He gets uppity if you tell him to go to class and is generally a stupid, whinging little bitch.
Is it entirely wrong of me to find his not showing up to class really disrespectful???? The rest of us take our educations seriously and it pisses me off that he doesn't and gets to hang around.
AHH I am so freaking annoyed with this douchebag.

I was Lota from Island of Lost Souls, which is a really great movie that I discovered by chance because of Lota’s beautiful face.
I was probably about 17 and I was browsing a VHS sale where I could just afford three tapes. I found one with the old Addams Family TV series, Metropolis, Nosferatu and this other movie, Island of Lost Souls, that I’d never heard of but the girl on the cover was so extremely gorgeous. I was trying to choose between Nosferatu and Island of Lost Souls for a long time and finally figured I’d get the unknown movie since I’d already seen Nosferatu and it’s a well known movie that probably wasn’t going to be hard to find some other time.
When I got home and watched it I realised it was a version of The Island of Dr. Moreau. I was already a fan of the one with Val Kilmer and Marlon Brando and I liked this version even better. I have yet to read the book but I’m sure I’ll love it. I remember doing my makeup like Lota and being disappointed that it didn’t make me look like her since my face has a completely different shape than hers, which was still the case when I dressed up like her today, but anyway, here are some photos!
There are a couple of “outtakes” in colour over at my boyfriend’s Flickr.
I cut and styled the wig, dyed and printed the fabric to look like the one Lota wears, made the necklace beads with clay and made the claws from a set of regular fake nails.

| Network Maintenance - Saturday, October 31, 2009 at 04:00-05:00 GMT/UTC |
[30 Oct 2009|05:17pm] |
EDIT: If you're reading this, our maintenance is OVER! The problem was not found on our equipment, which means we'll have to work with our ISP to fix this small problem -- which also means another maintenance window in the future -- but at least we have eliminated our side.
Thank you everyone, and a special shout out to rekoil for giving me a great suggestion AND also the opportunity to feel like I've just called in to a local radio station.
Have a great day, night or afternoon wherever you may be.
---
Hi everyone, sorry for the late notice but I'm going to have to do some testing on 1 of our 4 internet circuits TONIGHT; Friday night or Saturday morning depending on which time zone you're in.
Most of us shouldn't notice any impact, though there may be some slowness or lag when I switch traffic on to our other ISP circuits and then another hit when I stop the tests. If a page won't load or times out, try hitting refresh 1 or 2 times and it should load then. If it doesn't work at all... trust me, I'll be typing really really really fast to try to undo whatever I just did. Hopefully you'll have some Halloween candy (if you're in the USA and celebrate that kind of thing) nearby to take away the bitterness of a small site outage. :(
Here's the handy-dandy Website That I Always Use to get a feel for when the maintenance will start in your area. Our site traffic historically dips on Friday afternoons until Saturday morning which is why we tend to pick this time for maintenance work.
( tech details )
status.livejournal.org will, of course be updated before and after the maintenance window. Or else marta will get mad at me. :D
